Public Schools (MCGM)
The Primary Education system of the Mumbai Municipal Corporation is the largest Urban Primary Education system in Asia and may be in the world. More than 4.70 lakh children avail of free education in 8 different mediums of instruction through 1400+ schools spread across the city. There are various types of government schools of which the most common are the Upper Primary Schools or UPS and the Mumbai Public Schools or MPS. Schools of the UPS type are from grade 1-7 while the MPS types run from K-10. Of these 1400 schools, 49 schools are English medium of which only 12 schools go upto grade 10.
It may be pointed out that Municipal Corporation is making efforts for qualitative improvement of Primary Education in Greater Mumbai. Several innovative schemes have been introduced such as Mid Day meals, Sarva Shiksha Abhyiyan, School Excellence Program etc.
Teach for India has partnered with the MCGM since 2010 first by placing fellows in 15 UPS type schools and then undertaking a School Transformation Project through which periodic leadership development trainings for principals and pedagogy training for teachers are conducted.
Several common features are present in all MCGM schools- large class sizes, high student- teacher ratio, administrative duties, decent infrastructure and 27 items provided to the student at the start of the academic year. Most of these schools operate in 2 shifts, morning and afternoon, where space is shared between higher and lower grades or in some cases between different mediums of instruction. This arrangement requires a lot of cooperation and mutual understanding.
MCGM schools need to plan events and outings in advance since there are well defined processes and protocols which need to be followed. There are several officials alongwith the principal who influence decisions in the school and it is important to build and maintain relations with them to ensure smooth functioning.
